Low subcutaneous fat around the eye or simply your genetic background can both be the reason for visible blood vessels also known as “under eye bags”. Lack of sleep and excessive consumption of alcohol and other drugs, mineral & vitamin deficiency or different diseases can be the cause of visible dark circles. As we grow older our skin gets thinner thus blood vessels can be seen through the skin under the eyes even more. Those shadowy areas are in fact a result of aging.
Tear sacs are a visible swelling or slackness of the lower eyelid area. In more severe cases, a fold may form at the lower edge of the lacrimal sac, pulling the lower eyelid downward. Sudden appearances of under eye bags can be caused by an accumulation of water due to a dysfunctional lymph flow. However, alcohol and nicotine consumption, little exercise, stress, lack of sleep or allergies can also be the reason for sudden swelling.
In general, they are a simple consequence of aging, as the muscles lose their elasticity and the fatty tissue around the eye is no longer being held in place by the connective skin tissue.
Dark circles are discolorations of the skin around, and especially under, the eyes. The skin around the eyes is approximately three times thinner than on other parts of the face. In comparison to the skin of the body, it may even be up to six times thinner. This is due to the fact that we do not have any underlying skin or firm connective tissue around the eye area.
Basically, there are four different types of conditions that can lead to dark circles under the eyes:
Excessively pigmented skin
There are special pigments in the skin, called melanin, which help determine the color of the skin. The higher the amount of pigments in our skin, the darker our skin appears. If melanin is increasingly found in certain areas, this is called hyperpigmentation. This so-called hyperpigmentation can be shown in the eye area by the appearance of dark circles under the eyes.
Visible blood vessels
Since skin around the eye area is extremely thin, blood vessels can easily be seen. This causes shadowy spots, which results in dark circles.
This condition can be intensified by following aspects:
Lack of sleep
Chronical stress
Low fluid intake
Malnutrition
Drugs / alcohol / nicotine
Iron & vitamin C deficit
Other fundamental diseases (e.g. thyroid)
Oxygen deficient blood
Inherited predisposition
Age-related
As we age, the subcutaneous fat loses texture and skin generally decreases in its’ thickness, which causes the vessels to shine more through the skin.
Most importantly staying hydrated can have a great impact. Adults should drink about two to three liters of water per day. In addition, getting enough sleep is one of the basic needs for a youthful and fresh appearance. Approximately seven to eight hours a day are recommended.
We also recommend taking special care of the skin around your eyes and keeping it moisturized. Specific Eye Care products can help maintain the right nourishment, so that you can prevent dark circles and bags under the eyes.
A healthy lifestyle as well as a healthy diet do both slow down the natural skin aging process.
